Cosmosent "Auto Div"

Cosmosent Labs, Inc.

by our Founder & CEO, Steven W.

(last updated Mon, July 24th, 2023)

FYI, on August 2nd, 2022, we established an Automotive Division inside Cosmosent Labs, Inc.

Its charter is to develop prototype "Tesla Killer" Sports Sedans, based-upon 2006-2008 BMW 325i/328i E90 Sedans, each with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Sports Package, & Leather.

Each gets a custom rebuilt N52+ as spec'd below, where N52+ represents our custom version of BMW's N52.

As a reminder, OR for those who are UN-aware, 2006-2008 E90 sedans were the last 3-series sedans with BMW's highly-prized Hydraulic-assist Power Steering !

OK, but why do you call it a "Tesla Killer" ?

400+ miles of range at 90+ MPH, Best-in-Class "Steering Feedback," 6-speed manual transmission, curb weight < 3300 lbs, 50/50 weight distribution, & with an MSRP of ~$23K USD.

And, it will be able to tow the Airstream REI Special Edition Basecamp 16, which starts at $52,900.

And last but NOT least, the N52+ should be good for up-to 200K miles !

And BTW, our Automotive Division is concurrently working on an "Electric" Hydraulic-assist Power Steering solution for the (follow-on) EV version of our Sports Sedan.

As a reminder, OR for those who are UN-aware, the Founder & CEO of Cosmosent Labs, Inc., rebuilt the 289 engine in his first car, a 1966 Mustang coupe with 3-speed manual transmission, by himself the last two months OR so of his senior year in high school (in Auto Shop).

The key compoenents::

Bored 30-over (by Clark's Machine Shop), TRW 10:1 Perf Piston Kit, Sig Erson TQ-30 camshaft (0.495" lift intake & exhaust, 274 degrees of duration intake & exhaust), Carter 625 competition series carb, Blackjack headers paired with a custom exhaust system, & ACCEL Ignition System.

The result:

300 HP at 6,250 RPM

300 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 RPM

In a car that weighed ~3,000 lbs with the driver !

First gear could be launched at 2,500 RPM & would take the car up to 60-65 MPH before requiring a shift to 2nd.

Required a new High-Perf clutch plate & throw-out bearing every six months OR so when driven hard.

Fairly rough idle; you never hear Engines like it on the street anymore.

Key lesson learned: It wasn't a good fit for the Street, too much Perf.

Drove it for six years anyway (two years at De Anza, four years at Cal Poly, SLO)
